Not a bad show – but it had nobody as cool as Kara Thrace or Helo! Now THAT’S great science fiction!
The original Star Trek would fail by today’s science fiction standards: its plots and characters are comprehensible and unpretentious, and unapologetically masculine. Biggest sin of all, though – it was full of hope and optimism. I mean, nobody on the original Trek even once gratuitously blew their brains out. Gimme a break!
You’re 100% right. Well, not about SyFy women like Kara Thrace or Helo (or Leigh Adama, for that matter – I understand there are clips on the cutting room floor of scenes where Apollo shaves….his legs!), but about Star Trek likely failing if it debuted on tv today. We can only hope the pendulum swings back and good old fashioned fun – but thoughtful – SF becomes popular again.
