Looks Great To Me!

Though I really enjoyed Spider-Man (2002), that partcular depiction of The Green Goblin left me wanting a bit more. The acting was fine, I just didn’t care for the visual.

Well, here’s some abandoned makeup designs for The Green Goblin. I really like the look, and I wished they would have used it.

Guests will also preview clips from Stan Lee’s documentary “With Great Power – The Stan Lee Story.” Celebrities from all of Lee’s films and creations have been invited to attend this special event.

The Incredible Hulk TV Trailer with Tony Stark

They must be nervous

Looks like the movie execs are getting a little antsy bout their upcoming Incredible Hulk film. After all, their first Hulk film a few years ago was decidedly underwhelming. A very forgettable film. Well, the sequel/reboot has a new cast and new creative people behind it.

And this Summer’s big movie hero, Iron Man himself Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

I got the impression that they were keeping the cameo appearance of Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk a bit on the QT. And why not – a neat crossover appearance by Marvel’s other Summer 2008 hero was just the thing to get the oldschool fans excited, and get everyone ready for The Avengers movie in 2011.

So they decided to let Tony Stark’s cameo appearance slip in the TV ads. So I’m not giving anything away! Still, I wonder if there will be anything after The Incredible Hulk’s end credits. Hmmmm…

Iron Man – $104 Million USA, $97 Million International

Nikki Finke’s excellent Deadline Hollywood Daily reports the great news:

SUNDAY AM: Here are the official blockbuster numbers — Paramount Pictures release of Marvel Entertainment’s Iron Man, in 4,105 theaters, made an estimated $35,125,000 on Friday 5/2, an estimated $37,500,000 on Saturday 5/3, for an estimated 3-day weekend box office of $100,750,000.

Advance screenings in select locations, about 2,500 venues, from 8:00 PM to midnight on Thursday 5/1 contributed an additional $3,500,000. With this addition, the total estimated box office is $104,250,000.

The estimated international box office for the weekend is $96,750,000 from 57 territories.

The total combined estimated global box office for Marvel Entertainment’s IRON MAN is $201,000,000.

Amazing Armor, It’s Iron Man

Back in the early 1960s, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and others were blazing new trails in comic history as they were ushering in what would be known as The Marvel Age of Comics. Their creativity and output was at a peak, and numerous classic characters broke onto the scene, changing comic books forever!

At the time, Marvel published several weird tales/fantasy/science fiction comics. Among those titles was Tales of Suspense, an anthology series comprised of short stories usually dealing with a monster or other supernatural theme. Well, with great characters like The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man forming the cornerstone of the Marvel Universe, the wizards at Marvel decided to create a new hero for Tales of Suspense – The Invincible Iron Man!

So since Iron Man will enjoy a major movie release in just a few weeks on May 2nd, I decided to feature Tales of Suspense #39 in the Greatest Comic Covers series. That’s the origin and 1st appearance of Iron Man!

Swiping The Amazing Spider-Man #50

Just saw the neat poster for the upcoming Incredible Hulk film, which I hear will be more of a reboot than a sequel to the underwhelming, ponderous Ang Lee Hulk film. When I saw the poster, I knew it reminded me of something I had seen before – something classic, iconic, and oldschool.

Well, it didn’t take long for me to remember the classic cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #50, by the talented hand of Jazzy Johnny Romita, Sr!

Now, that’s close! Nice to see the suits in Hollywood can swipe a Classic Comic Cover now and then for a major motion picture!

The Incredible Hulk will be released on June 13, 2008.

How Spider-Man 3 Should Have Ended

Spider-Man 3 Out on DVD Today!

Well, of course I was one of the first kids on my block to run out and get a copy of Spider-Man 3 on DVD! I believe the DVD has about six hours of additional features, which really shows how ridiculous these things are getting. The 2 1/2 hour movie was long enough – who needs another six hours of introspection and behind the scenes stuff?

This of course leads me to the meat of the matter: Spider-Man 3 was very good, but it wasn’t great and it is widely acknowledged as the weakest of the Spider-Man film series. Too long and too much nonsense were common criticisms, and while I liked it I can’t help but agree.

Well, kick back and enjoy this great animated video I found on YouTube that pokes some well-deserved fun at Spider-Man 3.

Does Whatever A Spider Can

Marvel Comics was building a creative, dynamic universe in the early 60s, with innovations on many fronts. One of the most popular titles of that era was, of course, The Amazing Spider-Man. Under the talented hand of Steve Ditko and the creative force of Stan Lee, Spider-Man captured fans’ imagination and crafted an unusual super hero for that era.

But some changes were in the works. After just over a three year run, the art duties of Spider-Man would be transferred to the talented John Romita, Sr. Under his art direction, Spider-Man would truly come into his own and that particular vision of the hero remained the dominant image for decades.

The switch was to coincide with a big turning point in Spider-Man’s life. The Amazing Spider-Man #39 would be Romita’s first issue, and it would also culminate a story line involving The Green Goblin, Spider-Man’s arch foe. The cover tells it all – The Goblin is seemingly victorious, and has evidently discovered Spider-Man’s secret identity!

This is pretty heavy stuff for the mid 1960s! In any event, it’s one of the greatest comic stories of all time, and easily one of the greatest comic book covers of all time! Enjoy!

Doc Samson is in “The Incredible Hulk”

Everything but the kitchen sink?

Just got word that actor Ty Burrell will portray Doc Samson in the upcoming ‘Incredible Hulk’ film. The Mail Tribune up in the pacific northwest reports…

He managed to get time away from the show recently for shooting on Louis Leterrier’s upcoming movie “The Incredible Hulk,” with Edward Norton, Liv Tyler and Tim Roth. Burrell plays Doc Sampson. The picture is due for release in June.

I’m starting to think the production is being dominated by fanboys who want to shoehorn as much of the Hulk mythos as they can into a 2 hour film.

Dennis Miller interviews Stan Lee

Always nice to hear what Stan has to say!

On October 8tn, 2007, Dennis Miller did a quick interview with Stan Lee on his relatively new radio show. Dennis has a great sense of humor and his radio show is really taking off. Last week, a caller just casually suggested that he invite Stan on the show, and Dennis’s people got on it quickly and made it happen just a few days later!

Stan discusses some memories of Nick Fury, flatters Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, covers the 1960s Marvel Comics creative process, and manages to mention the new Iron Man and Hulk films.

Dennis is a genuine fan of Stan and Silver Age Marvel Comics, so it’s clear that this interview is a genuine treat for him. Enjoy!

The Sky Rider of the Spaceways!

The original run of the Silver Surfer comic book (1968-1970) is a true classic. The first spin-off of The Fantastic Four comic, it featured one of the most original characters in the Marvel Universe.

The run boasted several great covers, but my personal favorite is the cover to Silver Surfer #4. It features SS and The Mighty Thor about to clash in battle. Indeed, this is one of my alltime favorite comic covers! They just don’t make them like this anymore!

Kudos to the giants of the Marvel Age of Comics to give us great stories like this one, as well as one of the greatest covers of all time! Special thanks to the talented John Buscema for drawing this memorable, fantastic cover!Similar Posts:

Iron Man Looking Good – May 2, 2008

I can’t say I was ever much of an Iron Man fan growing up. Definitely a second-tier character in the rough & rugged Marvel Universe. In fact, I didn’t know anyone who read Iron Man comics regularly, though now and then I would pick one up just to see what was going on.

Well, after the wild success of the X-Men and Spider-Man films, Marvel has fast tracked many of their properties. Iron Man, of course, is getting the big screen, big budget treatment. Well, a teaser trailer is finally out, and I gotta say, this one is looking good.

Galactus in ‘FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer”

Oldschool Galactus is in FF2 after all?

While I enjoyed Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer for its escapist fun, I was a bit down that the traditional depiction of Galactus from the original comics didn’t make an appearance. I kind of expected he wouldn’t, but I missed it nonetheless.

Well, like most kids on my block I picked up my own copy of the DVD of FF:RotSS on Tuesday and watched the film again. It’s about 90 minutes long so it’s no big chore!

I had heard that a homage to the oldschool Galactus did indeed appear in the film, but didn’t really catch it in the theaters. Well, I think there is something to this argument. Some screen captures follow.

One very compelling image happens around 1:05:48 of the film – Galactus’s shadow is seen on Saturn as he crosses our Solar System. That’s one big guy to cast a shadow like that!

That sure looks like his helmet to me! WOW!

At around 1:21:25 or so, there is another scene. This time a close-up of the outline of his head and helmet.

That’s Galactus’s head and helmet alright – it’s the right shape. DOUBLE WOW!

Only a few moments later, at around 1:21:49, we catch another peek at Galactus’s head & helmet:

There is the oldschool Galactus’s head once again – you can see the outline of his helmet and especially the distinctive protrusions from the sides.

Yes, this is just circumstantial evidence, I know, but looking back, it’s clearly deliberate and a nice touch. So looks like the Galactus we know and love was in FF2 after all!

Marvel Comics Stamps from the USPS

Excelsior!

Looks like our friends at the USPS have decided to follow up on last year’s DC Comics stamp series with a Marvel Comics stamp series!

Looks like a nice set! Some great comic images – in fact, they remind me of the early 70s ‘clip & save’ coupons in Marvel Comics – many comics of that era were mutilated because of that stunt! Haha!

The standouts here include Spider-Man, Captain America & The Silver Surfer. I question the inclusion of Spider-Woman and Electra, but I suppose they wanted to include a couple of Marvel Women, and lets face it True Believer, the field is fairly thin! An Invisible Woman stamp could have been inspired – just a stamp with no image on it!

Also, Wolverine is a fan-favorite but they chose the cover of X-Men #1, which came out about a decade before Wolverine first appeared! Strange…

Still, I’ll be picking up a sheet of these great stamps!Similar Posts:

J. Michael Straczynski to write ‘Silver Surfer’ Film

The LA Times reports that SF fan-favorite J. Michael Straczynski, the creative force behind Babylon 5, will be writing the Silver Surfer spinoff film.

Sad to report that the creative types have turned their brains off at the door and suggest that a Silver Surfer film take a ‘darker route.’

That’s not to say a SS film can’t be ‘mature.’ I just get the sense that the film industry (and the comic industry) instinctively believes that ‘mature’ means ‘darker,’ and ‘darker’ means ‘mature.’ Neither is the case, of course. But given the junk both industries crank out, I expect no more from them.

William Hurt joins Ed Norton & Tim Roth for Hulk 2

Star Studded ‘The Hulk 2′

Yahoo news reports that the cast for Hulk 2 now includes William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross! The cast is looking pretty good!

The good word is that filiming will be starting soon for the follow up to the underachieving Ang Lee ‘Hulk’ film.

William Hurt has joined the all-star cast of “The Incredible Hulk,” which is slated to begin shooting this summer in Toronto.

The action sees Bruce Banner/Hulk (Edward Norton) on the run, trying to avoid capture long enough to cure the condition that turns him into a monster. Hurt will play Gen. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the man who has dedicated his life to capturing the Hulk — and who also is the father of Banner’s love interest, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Also on board is Tim Roth as villain Emil Blonsky/the Abomination.

French filmmaker Louis Leterrier (the “Transporter” movies) is directing the project for Marvel Studios.

Here’s hoping for the best, since The Hulk deserves better than the Ang Lee film!Similar Posts:

Do You Have a ‘Silver Surfer’ Quarter?

The Power Cosmic – All In Color For A Quarter

I’ve been following the story of 20th Century Fox’s publicity stunt, in cahoots with The Franklin Mint, to put 40,000 altered quarters into the stream of commerce to promote the upcoming film “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.’

When I first read about this a few days ago, it struck me as strange since defacing US currency for such a stunt is a crime. I figured they weren’t real quarters but rather commemorative coins or something like that.

Turns out that they are real quarters that the grapchics wizards at The Franklin Mint doctored up. MSNBC reports…

The U.S. Mint said
in a news release Friday …

â€œThe promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by
the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint,â€ according to the release. The federal mint did not say whether the studio or the private Franklin Mint would face a penalty.

The altered coins are quarters honoring the state of California that entered circulation in 2005. They feature George Washington on the front, as usual, but a colorized version of the character on the back. All 40,000 are slated to be in circulation throughout the country by the end of Memorial Day weekend, and about 800 were released in each state.

The coins appear to be fetching a high price on ebay, with winning bids over $100 common. I’ll just be happy if the movie is good! :-)Similar Posts:

New Trailer for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

…And Four will be Fantastic

Our friends at Apple have posted the new full-length trailer for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which is supposed to run with Spider-Man 3 this weekend! Some storyline elements are revealed in the trailer, some expected and some not. Read on, True Believer!

US Military satellites have captured images of a strange, silver skinned man riding a surfboard and causing all sorts of havoc around the Earth. The military honchos do exactly what we expect when confronted with something they know nothing about: seek out the expertise of Dr. Reed Richards and The Fantastic Four!

At some point, the mysterious Silver Surfer appears to have an appointment to meet with another Doctor we’re familiar with – Victor Von Doom, Lord of Latveria!

It also seems that Johnny Storm’s initial encounter with The Silver Surfer has had an unexpected effect – he can now temporarily ‘swap’ superhuman powers with whoever he comes into physical contact with. Leave it to the ever lovin’ blue eyed Thing to test this out!

With the fate of the world in the balance, the only thing that stands in the way of planetary destruction at the hands of Galactus is The Fantastic Four!!!

Well, FF2 looks pretty good, though you can’t tell all that much from movie trailers these days! A little speculation:

Looks like this film borrows a bit from some classic FF storylines – the original Galactus Trilogy in FF 48-50, and I’d bet a slice of pizza that before the movie is over, Dr. Doom will wind up stealing The Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic for a brief while, just as he has done in the comics. I hope we see ‘The Ultimate Nullifier,’ too!
The principals have assumed their familiar roles – Reed & Sue as paternal figures, and Ben & Johnny as combative siblings, all bound by loyalty and familial love. Good to see – the FF aren’t just a superhero team, exactly. I have always seen them as a group of adventurers and a family, who take on more science fiction themed adventures than simply traditional superhero antics. Of course, the FF have strong elements of the traditional superhero archetype, but their best and most memorable stories often have a broader scope and significance!
Looks like they are having some fun with the ‘power-swapping’ phenomenon. Works for me – very Kirby & Lee! Thing is, this pretty much is The Super Skrull’s gimmick, so since we will pretty much see it done in FF2, odds are that a Super Skrull FF movie won’t happen. I know, it was a long shot anyway!

Overall I get the sense that FF2 will be some cool, escapist fun with a sense of humor and a comic book & science fiction flavor – in other words, exactly what the FF should be!Similar Posts:

First Look: Iron Man Grey Armor

Iron Man Goes Retro

Our good friends at Ain’t It Cool got a sneak peek at the first Iron Man armor to be featured in the upcoming film. I think it looks very cool, very evocative of the very first Iron Man adventure where he scrapped together the materials needed for his life-saving armor from used parts while held captive of the vile North Vietnamese bigshot, Wong-Chu!

I really like the armor, especially the glowing circle in the center of the chestplate. Getting some good vibes from Iron Man!

Also, some mixed news from Aint It Cool when it comes to FF2 – looks like the voice of Galactus will be Laurence Fishburne, and also looks like the early advance word on the film isn’t very promising:

[A]pparently in Seattle on the night of April 10th – Fox had a test screening of FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER and the word on the screening that has reached me is that the film was “sooo bad that they felt dirty and wanted to write letters of complaint.”

The film is supposed to be released in June – not a lot of time to fix any problems, if they exist. Wait and see…Similar Posts:

USA Today continues its tradition of moving away from reporting the news and instead running press releases and helping with the publicity of the next flavor of the month. Today, they ran a brief article and photo of one of the featured characters of the next Fantastic Four film, The Silver Surfer.

Fans of the comic know that The Silver Surfer first appeared in comic books way back in FF # 48, at the beginning of the fabled Lee-Kirby classic, “The Galactus Trilogy.” I gotta say, though this pic is clearly intended to give oldschool comic book fans goosebumps, it leaves me a bit cold. I always figured the Surfer to be devoid of facial detail and this made his character (with all the requisite angst and shameless introspection) more poignant.

Dr. Reed Richards Builds A Mechanical Marvel!

One of the films I am looking forward to this coming summer is the sequel to the fun & funny ‘Fantastic Four’ film, ‘FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer.’ It promises to bring to life the legendary Lee-Kirby ‘Galactus Trilogy’ from FF # 48-50! Debuting in this film will be the FF’s versatile ‘Fantasticar.’

Iron Man Movie News: Iron Man vs The Mandarin

Amazing Armor, Iron Man

Some news on the Iron Man film project that has been kicking around for several years now. The jury is still out on this one, but let’s give it a chance!

Academy award nominee Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow) has been cast as Tony Stark’s confidant, Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes. Howard will be joining Robert Downey Jr. who is set to portray Tony Stark and Iron Man.

Also, on July 22, 2006 at the San Diego Comic-Con, director Jon Favreau confirmed that the villain for the upcoming film would be The Mandarin. He also announced that, “The suit will be more like a weapons platform than a flying suit Ã¢â‚¬â€œ more of a War Machine-feel to it.”

Word is the movie will help kick off the Summer 2008 movie season when it opens on May 2, 2008.

I don’t have either a good feeling nor a particularly bad feeling about this project based on what we know so far. I can’t say that Robert Downey Jr. matches my vision for Tony Stark, but I’m willing to give it a chance! I guess we will all find out in 2008!Similar Posts:

A True American Icon Arrives!

It’s not like this is going to be only a collection of nutty comic book covers! 63 years ago Americans were coping with the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Fleet and beginning to accept that their immediate future would include a long, brutal war with Japan, Germany, & Italy, I thought I would honor this time with one of the greatest comic book covers, ever.

In the year before the attack on Hawaii, there was increasing uneasiness about America’s role in the growing conflict in Europe. It was against this backdrop, in March 1941, that comic creators Joe Simon and Jack ‘King’ Kirby created the one true American comic book icon, Captain America.
