All My Favorite TV Shows Get Canceled Quickly
Way back in the mid 1980s, Writer-Director-Producer Michael Mann was riding high with his slick & polished tv series, Miami Vice. I admit I was never really a fan of the show, but it had a strong run for a while and a dedicated fan base.
Mann could pretty much write his own ticket in those days, so when it came time for him to pitch a new series, he dared to try something a bit different. NBC gave him the go-ahead for a pilot movie and series for his new project, Crime Story.
Crime Story was a police drama set in the early 1960s, one of my favorite periods. The main tension was built around Chicago cop Lt. Mike Torelli (Dennis Farina) and ambitious hood Ray Luca (Anthony John Denison). The series followed law enforcement’s attention to Luca and crew’s criminal antics in Chicago and later, in my hometown of Las Vegas.
The show only lasted two years, and in that time some pretty good actors hit the scene for some appearances, most notably Kevin Spacey and Julia Roberts. The show was as inspired and stylish as anything on tv at the time, and probably much more so.
Most people remember the series for it’s opening theme, a re-recording of Del Shannon’s hit ‘Runaway.’ Well, they managed to coax Del out of semi-retirement to record an updated, brassier version of his classic song! NBC even put together a music video featuring Del singing and scenes of the tv series in order to help drum up interest in the series.
So sit back and enjoy the complete version (not the 1 minute opening credits version) of Runaway 1986!
So Long, Joey Bishop

I’m sad to report that Yahoo News is reporting that Rat Pack comedian Joey Bishop has passed away.
Joey Bishop, the stone-faced comedian who found success in nightclubs, television and movies but became most famous as a member of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack, has died at 89.He was the group’s last surviving member. Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Sinatra in 1998.
Bishop died Wednesday night of multiple causes at his home in Newport Beach, publicist and longtime friend Warren Cowan said Thursday.
The Rat Pack became a show business sensation in the early 1960s, appearing at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in shows that combined music and comedy in a seemingly chaotic manner.
Thanks for the laughter and great memories, Joey!
Sasquatch Near Sin City?
Art Bell’s Coast to Coast radio show is often filled with stories of the strange and unusual. But this weekend, he reported a story that broke on The Chattanoogan: seems like some folks caught video of ol’ Bigfoot right here in my backyard!

The story reports…
Lindsay Lemmon and Austin McGee said after returning from a trip out west, they found that video shot out the window along I-40 in New Mexico has a glimpse of what appears to be a hulking furry figure walking.
Mr. Lemmon, a local contractor who specializes in historic homes, said, “I’m still skeptical, but it does look like a figure to me. If it was a prank, then it was awfully hot and it was out in the middle of nowhere.”
Mr. McGee, who shot the footage, is much more positive. He said, “I believe it whole-heartedly. Every time I look at it on the VCR I see a figure with real long arms hanging below the knees. He is walking and swinging those arms.”
He said a close examination of the figure reveals “a tan round face.”
Can’t wait to see the full video! If it’s compelling enough, I will once again don my pith helmet & safari gear and lead an expedition to capture the cagey beast once and for all! If he is indeed close to Las Vegas, the game is afoot!
Hawaii 5-0 Wisdom
Here in Las Vegas, one of my local tv stations runs the great police drama, Hawaii 5-0. GREAT SHOW! If tv were more like this, I would watch more!
So I was checking out the rapidly fading YouTube for some cool 5-0 stuff, and came upon this great clip. In it, McGarrett gives a strong verbal reprimand to a handful of obnoxious, naive hippies!
Thanks, McGarrett – I couldn’t have said it better myself!
