Barack Obama visits 57 States on the Campaign - May 10, 2008 by Vinnie Vegas

The Poor Guy Is Tired

Barry Obama has racked up some impressive wins along the campaign trail, and surprised a lot of people by keeping his rival Hillary Clinton to a narrow win in Indiana a few nights ago. The smart, well spoken Chicago politician has impressed many with his style, which makes this little episode very noticeable.

It’s an easy thing to make fun of, to be sure. Senator Obama is clearly tired after a lot of work campaigning and it was just an innocent mental lapse.

The issue here, of course, is how this would have been handled if a prominent GOPer made the same mistake? President Bush would have been derided as a moron for days, and the video would have made the rounds on tv quite a bit. Senator McCain has taken heat for his age lately, so a similar mistake would have been characterized as old age settling in and the mind losing it’s sharpness.

But even though we have a video, Barry Obama gets a pass. And I think a pass is fair, but similar latitude should be extended to GOPers when appropriate.

McGovern Abandons Hillary, Endorses Obama - May 8, 2008 by Vinnie Vegas

Best News I have heard in a while!

That old fossil, George McGovern (finally recovering from the beatdown he suffered at the hands of Richard M. Nixon back in 1972), crawled out of his hole earlier today and saw his shadow! Political junkies know that this means at least another six weeks of Democrat primaries.

KSFY reports

Fmr. Sen. George McGovern Switches His Support

By Robert Wilson

A day before Senator Hillary Clinton is scheduled to visit Sioux Falls for a campaign rally, a long time Clinton supporter is backing someone else.

Former Presidential Candidate and South Dakota Senator George McGovern now says he will support Senator Barack Obama.

McGovern told KSFY telling President Bill Clinton about his decision was tough and he expects talking to Hillary will be very painful.

Senator McGovern said he’s thought about switching his support for sometime, but never felt it was the right time to do so until the results from North Carolina and Indiana came in.

In the name of unifying the party behind Barack Obama, McGovern says Hillary Clinton should step aside.

It’s just gotta’ hurt when George McGovern tells you that you can’t win.

“I don’t want to diminish the feeling I have for Hillary Clinton..she’s one of the most intelligent women in this country today,” said Fmr. Sen. George McGovern.

McGovern says it was the way Sen. Obama has planned his campaign and gathered grassroots support. He compares the Illinois Senator’s bid to his own run for the White House in 1972.

From your lips to God’s ears, Sir!

“Nobody thought I had a prayer. Who is this Junior Senator from South Dakota?” said Sen. McGovern.

He was (and is) an obnoxious nobody, and he was (and is) a loser.

And in Obama, McGovern says he sees something special. Something that makes Senator Obama worthy of being compared to someone else from Illinois: Abraham Lincoln.

“I’ve held that bar about as high as you can get it to think you might be another Abraham Lincoln,” said Sen. McGovern.

Interesting! Obama reminds me of….George McGovern!

Hillary Clinton’s Truth Problem - April 5, 2008 by Vinnie Vegas

Keep in mind that almost everything Hillary says here is untrue

Hillary Clinton has had problems with the truth all along the campaign trail. Recently on the stump, she related a hospital/insurance horror story with quite a bit of passion and detail. Here it is…

Well, the big problem with her horror story (where characteristically both a woman and a child are victimized) is that it didn’t happen.

ABC News reports

Clinton Drops Another Tale From Stump Speech

Another Clinton Campaign Story Shot Down

By ELOISE HARPER

For the second time in recent days, Sen. Hillary Clinton has had to drop a story from her stump speech after being challenged on its accuracy.

For the past month, the New York senator liked to tell the tale of a pregnant woman who was denied health care from an Ohio hospital because she did not have $100 the hospital demanded to treat her. After being turned away, the woman was brought back to the hospital days later with severe complications. She had to be rushed to another facility for advanced treatment, but it was too late. Both the woman and the baby died, Clinton told her audiences.

For Clinton, the story was an example of how everyone should have universal healthcare. It is a powerful tale and always drew gasps from the audience.

The hospital, which was never named in Clinton’s speeches, objected this weekend, saying it wasn’t true and demanded that Clinton stop telling it.

The O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio, told the New York Times that the woman was insured and was never denied treatment.

The Clinton campaign told ABC News today that the candidate heard the story from a deputy sheriff and had no reason to doubt the story.

“If the hospital claims it didn’t happen that way, we certainly respect that and she won’t repeat the story,” said Clinton spokeswoman Mo Elleithee.

“Candidates are told stories by people all the time, and it’s common for candidates to retell those stories,” Elleithee said. “It’s not always possible to fully vet them, but we try. For example, medical records are confidential. In this case, we tried but weren’t able to fully vet the story.”

Elleithee said the point of the story is that the country has a health care problem. “That’s a point very few people will dispute,” she said. The senator’s credibility came under fire last week when she tried to burnish her credentials as a veteran of international hot spots and described dodging sniper fire upon arrival in Bosnia in 1996 when she was traveling as a First Lady.

She admitted she “misspoke” when a video emerged showing her getting off the helicopter and being greeted by a girl with flowers. Clinton later tried to make fun of the misstep by telling Jay Leno during an appearance earlier this week that she almost was late because she was pinned down by sniper fire at the Burbank airport.

Well, that makes me feel a lot better -- they pretty much admit they shoot their mouths off half cocked, and there’s no claim that they ever even tried to verify the story.

Very shoddy. It’s really something that 1/2 of the democrat constituency is rooting for her. To be fair, it’s really something that the other 1/2 of the democrat constituency is rooting for that other guy.

Hillary Clinton’s New 3:00 AM Ad - April 3, 2008 by Vinnie Vegas

She sure has a strange fetish about late-night calls

Looks like Hillary Clinton is returning to the ad format that helped her whip Barry Obama in Texas and Ohio -- a bunch of cute kids sleeping and a late-night call on the Batphone, demanding her expertise, wisdom, and sound judgment.

The last time, it was some unnamed world crisis that demanded a bespectacled Hillary’s attention. This time, evidently some great late-night financial crisis makes her spring into action.

This stuff is self parody, clearly. The ad makes no sense. I really have to wonder about the kind of mind that is moved by an advertisement like this.

Golden Girl Hillary Trips at Dem Debate - November 1, 2007 by Vinnie Vegas

Brilliant, Quick Witted Hillary Can’t Take the Heat

hillyobama Golden Girl Hillary Trips at Dem DebateEarlier this week, the Democrats had another debate leading into the rough & rugged Democrat primary season. Of course, most Americans didn’t even know it was happening – they were too busy down at the neighborhood tavern with their baseball caps on backwards, watching the Lakers get beaten by the Rockets.

The only reason the debate was notable was that the anticipated Democrat presidential nominee, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, showed the first signs of just not being ready for prime time.

The NY Post reports…

Hillary Rodham Clinton stumbled badly at last night’s Democratic debate when she repeatedly refused to give a direct answer about whether she supports Gov. Spitzer’s plan to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens – and got slammed by her opponents for evasive double-talk. “I was confused on Sen. Clinton’s answer,” said Sen. Barack Obama, who backs the plan. “I can’t tell whether she was for it or against it.”

He added, “One of the things that we have to do in this country is be honest about the challenges that we face.”

Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut said a driver’s license was “a privilege, not a right,” and that illegals shouldn’t be allowed to get one.

Clinton shot back that “I did not say that it should be done,” prompting Dodd to counter, “You said yes.”

“No I didn’t, Chris,” Clinton insisted.

The Democratic front-runner said illegal immigrants are “driving on our roads. The possibility of them having an accident that harms themselves or others is just a matter of the odds.”

But she did not clearly say whether or not she backs Spitzer’s plan.

That prompted MSNBC moderator Tim Russert to ask, “Do you . . .support your governor’s plan to give an illegal immigrant a driver’s license?”

Again, Clinton wouldn’t respond directly, saying, “We want people to come out of the shadows,” and adding Spitzer is “making an honest effort to do it.”

“Unless I’m missing something, Senator Clinton said two different things in about two minutes,” said former Sen. John Edwards.

Check out the video of her performance…

Classic stuff, deserving of in-depth analysis from the heart of America, Vinnie Vegas style!

Analysishillydemdebate Golden Girl Hillary Trips at Dem Debate

Hilly did quite a number on herself this time.Russert starts by noting that she had told a New Hampshire newspaper that the NY Governor Spitzer proposal for giving drivers licenses to illegals “makes a lot of sense,” and then asks her why it makes sense.

Hillary then goes into a criticism of the Bush administration for failing to make Comprehensive Immigration Reform a reality, which really doesn’t make much sense. The Democrat controlled House & Senate failed to pass an Immigration Reform bill, so no bill was presented to the president for his signature. Blaming him for the Democrat leadership’s failure to navigate the bill through Congress is just wrong. This misdirection is punctuated by the fact that President Bush in fact liked the Democrat’s proposed bill and would have signed it into law.

The failure of Comprehensive Immigration Reform to become law is the fault of the Democrat controlled Legislature, not the Republican Executive.

Mrs. Clinton then matter-of-factly notes that at any given time we have ‘millions’ of illegals in NY State, and then quickly describes them as ‘undocumented workers,’ which of course presumes that they are all working at jobs, which is a dubious presumption.

Then she says that these illegal undocumented people are using our roads, which is undoubtedly true, and that it’s just a “matter off the odds” that they will get into automobile accidents and hurt themselves or others.

I think she is making a quiet logical connection that once illegals get drivers licenses, they will buy auto insurance, also. The only problem is, there is no real reason that this would be true. While a valid license is often a predicate to getting insurance, having insurance isn’t a predicate to getting a drivers license.

hillary2 Golden Girl Hillary Trips at Dem DebateMrs. Clinton evidently believes that once the illegals are given a drivers license, they will start becoming more responsible and buy auto insurance in enough numbers to make the whole plan worthwhile. This is broad conjecture, not based on anything in particular beyond wishful thinking.

Senator Chris Dodd then was the only candidates to clearly state that he was against giving drivers licenses, and took a deserved shot at Senator Clinton, pointing out that she said (in the NH news article) that she said Spitzer’s plan “made a lot of sense.”

Mrs. Clinton then took leave of her senses, insisting that she said no such thing. In fact, she never denied that she told the NH newspaper that the plan made a lot of sense, and when she originally answered Russert’s question, she explained why in her best judgment it did make sense. She repeats the idea that illegal alien licensed drivers would somehow be more responsible drivers (presumably because of the insurance issue), though again there is no clear logical nexus between the two.

She then describes Spitzer’s plan for 3 classes of NY State IDs, but in doing so only digs herself into a deeper hole as this plan just came across as poorly conceived and confusing. Mr. Dodd or course slammed her on this, which only seemed to annoy Mrs. Clinton even more, and she even dismissively waves her right hand as if to bat off Dodd and his observation.

Russert then tries to clarify, asking the NY Senator if she supports the NY Governor’s plan. Note her nervous head nodding as he asks a clear, pointed question to her. She then refuses to answer the question, and simply mentions that they have all failed in Immigration Reform, and then equivocates that while she doesn’t think that the plan is the best plan, she understand why it would be done.

So there you have it – after a few minutes of discussion on the matter, we don’t know where she stands of the issue if the policy decision was up to her. Credit to Dodd for a clear, unequivocal answer, and kudos to Senator Obama and John Edwards for giving clear, direct answers also.

Where does Hillary stand? It’s an idea that makes sense but she is unable to clearly endorse it or criticize it.

Parting Thoughts

It’s interesting to see that when pressed for a clear, direct answer, Senator Clinton can’t do better than appear annoyed and dismissive of criticism of her. Further, I find her hapless, almost stream of conciosness use of buzzwords disconcerting. In the span of a couple of minutes, she talks about comprehensive immigration reform, auto accidents, the value of getting illegals ‘out of the shadows,’ and ultimately notes ‘what’s the governor supposed to do?’

Not very inspiring from a candidate who wants to lead the nation.
