That Custer's body was surrounded by a majority of his officers proves that Custer was one of the first to be hit. His men gathered around him. He recovered little during the battle. Near its end he rose from behind his dead horse, fired off a few rounds. and realizing all was lost, he took his own life. His right arm useless from the first shot which ripped across his forearm before lodging in his chest, he fired his final shot with his left hand. Akeogh, or Calhoun gave their command up to give time for the recovery of Custer near the river after he was hit.

Though the Indians fairly won that battle, the bad publicity cost them dearly: it would be 106 years before they could open their first casino!
