Missed it by that much
Things are heating up for the June 20th release of Get Smart, starring Steve Carell. The folks at the studio have carted out the full length trailer, which isn’t nearly as good as the shorter trailers we saw a couple of months ago.
The new trailer seems uneven and poorly done. Not a good sign. Still, I’ll be there on June 20th, 2008.
And loving it.

Sad to say, it’s starting to look like a misfire; too much emphasis on CGI special effects, and not enough of the small banter that made the show so funny. That Hollywood would blow it, however, is to be expected.
I generally don’t like trailers that overdo it in the goofy humor department, but I think they have to do it to attract the masses to the movie theaters. I’m still hopeful that it won’t bomb and no matter how goofy, I love when he says “missed it by THAT much!”
Jaytee,
The first couple of trailers we saw were funnier and seemed to be more in the spirit of the original tv series. This is looking more like the illegitimate child of Rowan Atkinson’s Johnny English.
‘Johnny English’ was great, but this is supposed to be a ‘Get Smart’ movie. The more I see of it, the less it looks like ‘Get Smart.’
A shame.
Thelma,
I agree with you. And I will be there on June 20th and I still hope to enjoy this film.
One thing that bothers me, looking at all three trailers we have posted on SSC, is that they appear to have ‘missed it by that much’ when it comes to the characterization of Max.
In the original series, he was depicted as a buffoon who truly believed he was the greatest secret agent in the world. No matter how badly he would trip up, he never lost his poise or his confidence. Max was all about misplaced self assurance, and the comedy that naturally flows from it.
From what I have seen in the movie clips, Max is insecure and unsure of himself. I’ll wait and see how it’s done in the film, but early signs aren’t promising.
