‘Black Hole’ as a racist term?

Controversy comes to Dallas

Elected official John Wiley Price put his remarkable stupidity on display the other day when he took offense at the causal use of the term ‘black hole’ at a meeting, going so far as to demand an an apology.

Evidently, Price has no grasp that the term is a scientific term used by astronomers (that’s astronomers, not astrologers Mr. Price, in case you are confused about that delicate point), and has no racial component.

Be sure and take a minute to watch the two videos that document this incident - the first is the incident itself, and the second is Price trying to make sense .

As an added note, no doubt that very short white people will soon object to the use of the term ‘White Dwarf,’ and don’t get me started on what obese Native Americans will say about the use of the term ‘Red Giant.’

Dallas county officials spar over ‘black hole’ comment

01:42 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 9, 2008

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre Tuesday afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections “has become a black hole” because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud “Excuse me!” He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a “white hole.”

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster’s, is perhaps “the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape.”

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

Now do we have to wipe the word ‘black’ from our vocabulary or do we wipe out ‘hole?’

If I ever doubted that I lacked savvy, intelligence, clarity or wisdom all I have to do is see and read idiotic issues like this; rapidly my self assurance gets back on track! Geez!

This guy looks so foolish and seems to have no grasp on the fact that he comes across as a completely self important jackoff.

The only black holes that need to be apologized for, are the ones between Jones’s and Price’s ears!

I wonder if those two actually believe that they are making a good and important point. Fact is that their behavior makes them look bad AND stupid.

I still have a nagging feeling that those two usually look bad and stupid, anyway. :-)
