Running with Cloverfield this weekend

Courtesy of AintItCool.com, word is that Hollywood boy wonder JJ Abrams is giving fans a sneak peek at his big-budget, big-screen re-imagining of the original Star Trek series. A teaser trailer evidently will run with his giant monster attacks New York movie Cloverfield, which opens this weekend.

Looks like the teaser starts with some real-life inspirational quotes about space exploration, and then gives fans a view of the construction of the original Enterprise.

Gotta admit, it looks pretty sharp!

Welcome back to your Blog VV!!! hahahahah

I must say, I want to go see it. I just asked my son if he would go with me and he won’t. Grrrrrrrr. Maybe this will be the first movie that I go see by myself. Looks good to me!

Well, naturally, I expect the special effects to be - yawn - state of the art. Let’s wait ’til we see what the actors can do.

    Thelma,

    Good to be back!

I’ll end up going to see it, of course, but my expectations are low. They can make the special effects look all cool, but ultimately the charm of Trek was the actors and characters. They will bring back most of the characters (no Bones McCoy, I hear), but the fresh cast changes things so much that I sincerely doubt they will capture lightning in a bottle once again.

    Jaytee,

And the irony is that the special effects don’t have to be state of the art to deliver fan pleasing, engaging science fiction. The original Trek wasn’t even cutting edge special effects in its time - recycling the same half dozen shots of the Enterprise, for example, or the very obviously soundstage sets passing off as new planets, or the makeup of the steady stream of aliens who the crew tackled with. It was very good, but it fooled no one really.

But it didn’t have to fool anyone - it captured the imagination and gave us great memorable characters and stories.

Let’s see if the new, updated Trek can come close.

    Thelma,

Haven’t gone yet, probably this week. I did find out that the trailer above is not the one running with Cloverfield. I will track the newer one down soon!

I gotta admit I don’t like the idea of an all-new cast, and all the modern-day teen-young adult angst will no doubt find its way in this (and future) Trek movies.

      Wait and see.
