Where were teachers like this when I was 16?

Fox News in nearby Phoenix broke the story:

A high school teacher in Gilbert is placed on administrative leave, but the reason why is unclear. A YouTube video showing the teacher doing a cheer routine is believed to be the reason. The video was shot on a student’s cell phone. At times, the video is a little racy.

Check out the teach’s moves…

Looks to me like she was just having a little fun, that’s all. I suspect her suspension has more to do with wasting class time rather than any prurient aspect to the story.

In any event, provocative cheerleading & dance moves in this classroom setting can’t possibly be considered a good thing. Then again, it’s comparable to the dance moves by many high school cheerleaders, so it’s nothing those teens haven’t seen before. Indeed, by some standards it may even be considered tame.

I think that as a matter of policy, she shouldn’t be doing racy cheerleading moves like that in this context. I strongly feel that should be reserved for private parent-teacher conferences with single dads. In a motel room after a few drinks.

    You go, girl! ;-)

I think this teacher may have a shot at being Wonder Woman, too!

The routine’s not particularly suggestive, so I agree, I don’t think that’s the reason. Still, if it is because it was merely considered inappropriate during class time, it still doesn’t seem objectionable enough to warrant a suspension. A stern reprimand should suffice! But maybe she’s a troublemaker who’ve they’ve been waiting for an excuse to move on. (And I’d have no problem making a move on that l’il tamay-ta myself! Nyuk-nyuk!)

I’m more curious why she did it in the first place. Maybe a clue is that, according to the news story, she actually is a cheerleading coach or instructor. Maybe she was recruiting. Certainly in light of that background, it seems less inappropriate or unreasonable to me.

Maybe she decided to show the kids that although she’s an old fogey, she can still shake it down! I can’t help thinking though, that she’d have been more convincing, more powerful, if she’d just changed into the full costume.

Women always know that changing their clothes makes them feel powerful!

    Jaytee,

I agree. This isn’t really a a big deal, or rather it shouldn’t be. Like I wrote, I think she was just having a little fun. She appears to be a young woman, not all that much older than many of her students. Just showing them she isn’t a stale fuddy duddy.

Indeed, I suspect those with the biggest problem with this are stale old fuddy duddies, themselves.

One thing that I never appreciated was how some folks try and depict work and school environments as stoic, humorless places. “This is a professional environment, no place for an off-color joke!” the traditional mean faced, clipped haired, sensible shoed feminist would often intone.

In fact, I think that those environments are exactly the place for an occasional off color joke, or otherwise humorous breaks. Gotta’ let off some steam in a pretty stressful environment. Truth is, there is a whole segment of society that likes to pretend that these environments were always stoic and serious. They’re wrong, and should be called on their BS.

A stern reprimand for distracting the class for a minute seems fine to me. This isn’t a big deal, no matter how some folks will insist that it is.

And yes, I would have hoped she ’suited up’ in her cheerleading gear, too. “You know guys, I still fit into my cheerleading outfit from high school, wanna see??”

I’ve always been a sucker for that approach! Doubly so in a motel room. ;-)

I think that’s probably right; she’s not much older than they are. She had probably just come from a cheerleading practice (why else would she have the pom poms in the room), and someone in the class asked her for a demonstration. And kudos to her on her suppleness and flexibility! Shows real school spirit!

You guys are both right, this should have been dealt with as a stern reprimand, but only because the student taped it and it became a big deal. The teacher is young and she wants to win over her students, nothing wrong with that. Hey, a teacher with enthusiasm is never a bad thing. Sure beats the teachers who can put you in a coma. Now about the pom-poms, I wonder if she does burlesque on the side to supplement those low wages? heheheheh

    Jaytee,

Indeed! Kudos to her splendid, and limber, display of school spirit! All teachers should be so vibrant, energetic, and enthusiastic!

    Thelma,

This really is no big deal, we all agree. I hope the fit and frisky cheerleading teacher gets reinstated soon!
