Iron Man Looking Good - May 2, 2008

I can’t say I was ever much of an Iron Man fan growing up. Definitely a second-tier character in the rough & rugged Marvel Universe. In fact, I didn’t know anyone who read Iron Man comics regularly, though now and then I would pick one up just to see what was going on.

Well, after the wild success of the X-Men and Spider-Man films, Marvel has fast tracked many of their properties. Iron Man, of course, is getting the big screen, big budget treatment. Well, a teaser trailer is finally out, and I gotta say, this one is looking good.

Wow, this one feels real good! Looks like Downey’s gonna work out fine. Corny and obvious choice to use “Iron Man” as a theme song, but this is Hollywood, so we can’t expect too much original thinking, can we?

My only concern is, what, no Jessica Alba?

Downey looks to be a pretty good choice, depicting Tony Stark as a pretty arrogant, snarky captain of industry. That is, the depiction is true to the original comic incarnation! No doubt they will get into the alcoholism in later films. In the meanwhile, that’s the Tony Stark I always imagined, so I think it is a good job.

I didn’t like the use of ‘Iron Man’ but lets just hope it will be used in the marketing and not in the actual film. As you say, not much original thinking in the film industry!

As for Jessica Alba, the film hasn’t been finished yet, so let’s not give them any ideas, brother!

Jaytee, notice also that our prediction from a few months ago was right - he is an arms manufacturer who is kidnapped by Islamic terrorists, rather than that fiend from North Vietnam, Wong-Chu!

Though I have affection for the classic origin story, the prospect of Iron Man’s origin involving him obliterating a terrorist camp very appealing! Hooray for Iron Man!

Yep! Robert Downey, makes me feel, he’s a cool exec with a heart of steel! I’ll miss Wong-Chu, though.

I’ll miss Wong-Chu also. But look at it this way: Hollywood will give us a major motion picture where the superhero obliterates his Islamic Terrorist captors. You don’t see that every day, brother!
