Sentinel of the Spaceways!

The LA Times reports that SF fan-favorite J. Michael Straczynski, the creative force behind Babylon 5, will be writing the Silver Surfer spinoff film.

Fantastic Four #50

Sad to report that the creative types have turned their brains off at the door and suggest that a Silver Surfer film take a ‘darker route.’

That’s not to say a SS film can’t be ‘mature.’ I just get the sense that the film industry (and the comic industry) instinctively believes that ‘mature’ means ‘darker,’ and ‘darker’ means ‘mature.’ Neither is the case, of course. But given the junk both industries crank out, I expect no more from them.

Wait and see.

Well, the mention of JMS does give one a bit of hope, but the “darker” business is worrying. Given Norrin’s situation, it’ll probably have something to do with slavery. It’ll turn out that there’s a whole race of surfers enslaved to Galactus, and SS will flashback to his silver child dying in his arms! Heavy, man!

Yep, a darker tone isn’t exactly what the SS is all about. And JMS’s best years are behind him. In fact, much of his magic ran out even before B5 finished its run. Wait and see, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being a tepid collection of hackneyed situations.
